Staying Connected

This year, since we couldn’t always meet face-to-face, SEIU Healthcare discovered new ways to stay connected to you. Whether it was updating you on important COVID-19 information, organizing educational training sessions, or celebrating special events, we wanted to ensure you were always able to join us!

COVID-19 Resource Page

To help keep you informed and safe, we created a web page with various resources and updates. The information continues to be updated frequently as more information and resources become available. To date, tens of thousands of healthcare workers have visited this page.

To better support you during the uncertainties of the pandemic, your Member Service Centre (MSC) expanded their hours to provide more assistance to help you through COVID-19. Along with the MSC’s usual functions like helping with Labour Relation issues or Health and Safety advice, there will be additional live staff to answer your questions about the following topics:

  • Federal COVID-19 Economic Response Plan
  • Tax Credits and Benefits
  • WSIB
  • Mental Health Support
  • Health and Safety
  • Nursing Support Line

Facebook Lives

At the beginning of the pandemic, there was an overwhelming feeling of fear that flooded the healthcare system. In many workplaces, COVID-19 took over, and policies and procedures were changing every day, causing confusion and frustration for our members. Keeping our members up to date on the latest labour relation news and COVID-19 updates was vital.

From March to July, we held weekly Facebook Live events. Hundreds of members tuned in each week to join the discussion and have their important and urgent questions answered.

Telephone Townhalls

Throughout the year, we held many Telephone Town Halls to keep you informed. From responding to your pandemic-related inquiries, to educating our nurses about the Nursing Division, and to providing bargaining updates. We held interactive discussions to provide you with the information you needed to know and answer any questions you had.

Online Ratification and Steward Votes

2020 was an important year for new stewards and new collective agreements. SEIU Healthcare wanted to ensure that during the pandemic, the voting process was not affected and conducted efficiently. For many ratification votes and stewards’ votes, we created a system for members to vote online safety.

Online Steward Training

In January 2020, we welcomed new stewards to the SEIU Healthcare family. Due to the pandemic, we were unable to host our in-person 2020 Sector Steward Academy. Instead, we organized multiple Online Steward Trainings to ensure our new stewards had all the tools and resources they needed in their new roles.

Regional ZOOM Meetings

Your SEIU Healthcare Executive Board members hosted our first-ever Regional ZOOM Meetings. We know that each region has unique needs and challenges and wanted to provide a platform for members in the same area to connect and learn more about new union initiatives.

Nursing Division Education Webinars

For the first time ever, the Nursing Division held six Education Webinars throughout November and December. Each webinar was hosted by a Nursing Division Executive Board member and SEIU nursing staff. Topics discussed included: advocating in a political environment, asserting your Professional Responsibility, utilizing Workload Review Forms, and upcoming bargaining strategies.

Going Digital

We launched our brand new Member Portal – Memberlink – which gives all members online access to their collective agreements, stewards contact information, important documents, and our brand new e-learning platform.

In an effort to improve communications in our hospitals, we also launched digital union boards for many of our hospitals to keep our members better connected to what is going on in their unit and union.

Social Justice Capacity Building Educational Program

In November, we launched our Social Justice Capacity Building (SJCB) Educational Program at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre virtually through ZOOM. The program aims to educate our members on the essential elements of racial justice, equality, and inclusion. Together, we will be working towards building the confidence and skills to engage in important conversations about racism and learn how to take action against discrimination. In 2021, we will be expanding our SJCB Educational Program to more of our units.

Mobile App Coming in 2021!

In Spring 2021, we will be launching a mobile phone app that will put the Member Service Centre, your collective agreement, the latest news and more at your fingertips so stayed tuned!
