Best of the Rest

Financial Hardship Program

Many of our members experienced a loss in income due to COVID-19, whether it was a decrease in hours, choosing between jobs, taking time off to quarantine or isolate, or having to care for a loved one. Our Financial Hardship Program provided President Choice gift cards to help towards essential needs. Hundreds of gift cards were mailed out to members all over Ontario.

Airbnb’s Frontline Stays Program

SEIU Healthcare partnered up with Airbnb to offer our frontline healthcare workers a free and secure housing alternative. Many healthcare workers live in households with high-risk individuals, and to keep them safe, they left their homes to stay at hotels, RVs, or even their cars. We placed hundreds of members in Airbnbs to protect their loved ones. Working with Airbnb allowed these workers to battle COVID-19 in their workplace without endangering their family.

SEIU Healthcare Scholarship Program

March 18

Our education team announced the return of our $1800 Scholarships for the 2020 Fall semester. This year, we did something different and members helped us choose the four winners. 11 finalists submitted a video that introduced themselves and shared what healthcare meant to them or spoke about someone in healthcare that was important to them. After members reviewed each video, they were asked to vote for only four winners. Thank you to all who voted!

Our 2020 SEIU Healthcare Scholarship Winners are:

  • Leah Smith
  • Hannah Zmigrodzki
  • Sarah Ethier
  • Jonathan Beverly

New Retiree Program

September 30

SEIU Healthcare is completely revamping our Retiree Program. Marg Bourgoin – your Executive Board’s Retiree seat, shared her story through our very first retiree newsletter. We look forward to working with Marg to create a platform that welcomes new retirees and develop new initiatives to better serve our retired SEIU members.

Mask Distribution

With face coverings becoming mandatory in all indoor spaces across the province, we distributed SEIU Healthcare face masks to all our members.

No Union Dues on Pandemic Pay

With many of our members being financially impacted by the pandemic, we made the important decision to not charge any union dues on the government’s $3 per hour temporary Pandemic Pay premium. This kept more money in your pocket during a time you needed it most.

New Sisters and Brothers

  • YWCA – Transitional Living Program

  • Brant Community

  • The Sumach by Chartwell

  • Queens Estate Retirement Residence Meta Lifestyle
